No visit to Cedar Rapids is complete without a stop at NewBo City Market (The Market). This nonprofit business incubator and community hub for local artisans, entrepreneurs and creatives, is housed in a renovated manufacturing warehouse at the heart of the city’s hip and walkable New Bohemia District.
Not only is the structure impossible to miss with its red exterior and white water cistern, but the whole building is a living example of sustainability and resilience every day. The Market strives to be a zero-waste facility where everything is recyclable or compostable, rain water is collected and used to water the on-site garden and electric vehicles can get a free charge. A showcase of local talent, The Market is a one stop shop for dining, retail, arts and entertainment. You’ll find a wide variety of shops, restaurants and community events from concerts, yoga on the lawn, educational workshops and outdoor movies to a place to hang out and socialize.
“Everything we do as an organization, from putting on arts and culture events to supporting and developing small business owners, is meant to uplift economic development within our community,” said Julie Parisi, Executive Director of NewBo City Market. “We are honored to be able to provide that support, as one of the very few nonprofit public markets and business incubators in the country.”
Through the Market’s business incubator program, The Hatchery, aspiring small business owners are able to launch their entrepreneurial dreams, experiment and learn under the support of the incubator’s umbrella. The program specifically helps underserved entrepreneurs by reducing barriers to entry such as offering them financial assistance grants, business development mentorship, educational resources, and a well-networked community of peers. Graduates of The Market’s incubator can be found throughout the Cedar Rapids community.
“NewBo City Market has given me the opportunity to launch my business, meet new people, and try new things,” said Ashlee Mooney, owner of Not Anything Specific inside the Market and participant in the Hatchery program. “I feel like I have a voice here, and I get great exposure. It’s an amazing community, and a great way to get a taste of what Cedar Rapids has to offer.” Don’t miss your chance to discover something truly unique while shopping local, uplifting entrepreneurs and artists and experience fun and inspiring event programming and concerts.
