How do you multiply two big numbers if you do not know the multiplication table? Russian peasants, who were able to do commerce after abolition of serfdom, had an ingenious way. There will be a game with the audience, an interactive magic trick, and a historic method of multiplying large quantities. All of it could be explained using binary numbers.
Slav Sharapov, Professor of Mathematics at Kirkwood Community College, was born and educated in the Soviet Union. He attended graduate school at North Dakota State University and worked at Quinebaug Valley Community College in Connecticut for 10 years before moving back to the Midwest. He has been a full-time faculty member of the Math/Science Department at Kirkwood since 2008.
