The masters of French Impressionism are names that echo through the art history canon: Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and others.  The movement that began so ignominiously with an art critic’s takedown of Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise went on to become an international juggernaut whose images are known immediately by their distinctive brushwork and vivid colors.  Impressionism soon attracted the attention of artists from beyond France’s borders, and perhaps no group was more attentive than American artists.  William Merritt Chase, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent and dozens of others drew inspiration from French painters’ style to capture the unique spirit of America.
