Jerome Smallwood, owner of Vivian’s Soul Food, is on a mission. He wants to bring people from all walks of life together through Soul Food, and he is succeeding with his family-owned restaurant serving traditional southern soul food with a home-cooked flair.
“Soul food is the food you love. Nothing too fancy, just good, flavorful, down-home southern cooking,” Jerome describes of his life’s passion. “Every group of people has food that reflects their culture. As far as the African-American community in Cedar Rapids, we didn’t really have anything that reflected the food we eat at home. So, I looked at that as an opportunity to give something back to the community.”
You won’t find a multi-page menu, but you will find culinary delights perfected at his family dinner table and made with love. The menu is comprised of a couple house staples and rotating entrées masterfully made-to-order. “I don’t know how to cut corners, everything we do is from scratch,” Jerome says.
Named after his mother and grandmother, Vivian’s Soul Food is all about family. Each visit is sure to take you on a long walk of nostalgia from Granny's bold and well-seasoned kitchen to new flavor experiences sure to get your taste buds dancing.
