Last May, 14,000 people from all over the region eagerly made their way to Marion City Square Park to take in the Marion Arts Festival. The overall sentiment was that it was the best Marion Arts Festival ever.
Deb Bailey, Marion Arts Festival Director, echoed that sentiment. She joked, “We should just stop now, as we’ll never top it (2016).”
The weather was perfect, the art was magnificent and there was even a proposal at the half marathon finish line.
According to Bailey they receive, “eight times the number of application as we have booth spots. Artists compete to be here, because the community continues to fully embrace the quality of the art.”
2017 marks the 25th annual festival and the date has been set for May 20th. This is one of the truly can’t miss festivals in the area!
The one-day, 50-artist Marion Arts Festival is the shortest, smallest fine art fair in the country, and is consistently placed among the top tier of festivals nationwide. It was named by Art Fair SourceBook (Vancouver, WA) as among the Top 25 fine art and fine craft events in the nation for 2017!
This year the festival will showcase 50 exhibitors, representing 14 states, hailing from coast to coast and 24 years' worth of returning favorites, with 21 brand-new artists. The artists were selected from 358 applications, representing 30 states and Canada. Categories include: 2D Mixed Media, 3D Mixed Media, Ceramics, Digital, Drawing, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture and Wood.
Along with browsing and buying professional art, the “Empty Bowls” project features the sale of 1,000 student-made ceramic bowls, most priced at $5, with all proceeds to area food pantries. Hands-on activities feature Cedar Rapids’ The Ceramics Center, with families working side by side with professional artists toward the creation of bowls for the following year’s Empty Bowls sale. Add in a slate of specialty foods and off-beat artist demonstrations. In total, the festival offers a high caliber, fully accessible cultural experience – a day of fine art and flip flops, families and connoisseurs, fun and education.
We'll see you at Marion's City Square Park on Saturday, May 20th!
